thinking about how welcome to night vale does horror. the three scariest things this show (one that is, on the surface, surreal and creepy) has ever put forth are always in the form of something small. a wrong smile, representing the commodification of the body and the self. the terror of becoming lost without ever actually leaving, unmade without dying. and of making a selfish wrong choice and never even having to face consequences beyond the yoke of knowledge of what you’ve done. night vale is a testament to how we are here to make each other’s lives better; we face a world that is confusing and dangerous and impossible to understand in its entirety and we bear it by finding love and family and community. by building those things. the scariest possible outcome is not to be devoured by a cosmic horror. it is to be isolated. it is to face terror alone.
